AUTOBIOGRAPHY - Prenatal - 1949

Mom and Dad Wedding 1948
Location:  Muscatine, Iowa, Fifth Street Apartment

Originating Circle:  Mom and Dad, Dorothy Leota Brehm Parish and Richard Jones Parish, or as Mom always said, "Dick and Dottie"

What Happened:
Mom and Dad were married in 1948 and moved to Ames, Iowa where Dad was majoring in Food
Sisters:  Mary and Dorothy Brehm

Technology for his B.S. at Iowa State University (thanks to the GI Bill, Dad being a WWII vet).  Mom had graduated from secretarial school and immediately got a job at their church as the church secretary.  When Dad graduated in 1949 they were happy to move to an upstairs apartment in a house in Muscatine, Iowa.  Dad went back to work at H.J. Heinz Co. as a quality control inspector.  Mom began as a junior stenographer in the office of the Muscatine County Board of Social Welfare at the court house.

While I don't know the circumstances of my conception, I know that during the summer Dad was working the night shift and their landlady (who lived upstairs) often made snarky comments to Mom trying to find out if she went back to bed when Dad got home.  While Mom was pregnant, she/we almost died from an unlit gas oven.  Mom had no sense of smell, ever.  Happily, Dad came home unexpectedly and found Mom and saved us.
