Breakfast at Lucille's

Michele and Maria

My friend, the glamorous and brilliant Maria, is a Spanish professor.
When I worked at the University in Greeley, she often invited me to breakfast or dinner at her home.  Often the crowd that gathers to enjoy her delicious food and gracious hospitality speaks only or mostly Spanish.  I do my best to keep up, improving tremendously in the process.  Maria has a beautiful yard and patio, but since I've quit driving, I haven't seen this summer's changes. Since Maria spoiled me, now I'm experimenting with cooking for myself.

This past Saturday morning Maria drove down and we had a hilarious breakfast at Lucile's cajun cafe.  Maria's nephew (who is her age) and his wife joined us.   Stories of courtship and sex, polititics, food and travel ensued.  I haven't laughed so much in ages.

Feeling a little adventurous but resolute in sticking to my diet, I ordered eggs and bacon and green beans in garlic butter.  Maria tried the Special:  pulled pork over squash with green tomato sauce and poached egg in hollandaise sauce.  Instead of biscuits we were served something that looks and (I'm told) tasted like sopapillas covered with powdered sugar.  A cajun specialty.  I could taste the sweetness of the powdered sugar from across the table.

Lost count of the cups of coffee, but  I read in the paper that for your brain's sake you should try to drink four or five cups of coffee per day--and get a good night's sleep.
