Homework Hero

Sadie and I started being Homework Heroes tonight.  I thought we would have children read to us.  Instead we helped Nick, who is 9 and in the 4th grade with his spelling homework. That was okay--I did win a spelling bee or two when I was in school.  Thank goodness it wasn't calculus!

Nick had some tricky words, like habit in a list of words with double oo's and double bb's.  Not like rabbit nor, as Nick said, Hobbit.  It was a nasty habit.  With the word believe we got into "I before E except after C . . ."  which was all that was pertinent at the moment. Doug said he had a t-shirt that quoted that rule with the commentary:  "WEIRD."  Weird just doesn't follow any rules.  This is not a spelling lesson but a life lesson.

Nick had a list of words to alphabetize, and I could give him a tip or two about that. In my early years as a Kelly Girl I did a lifetime's worth of alphabetizing. Nick liked having Sadie at his lesson.  He liked having his Dad there too. I read them both the spelling words and they checked each other's papers, both the spelling  and handwriting.  Nick confided that he has trouble with his d's going the right direction.  I think Nick and Dad both had a good time.  I know I did.  Sadie wasn't so happy until she could take off her bag and have Nick play with her. When folks came in bearing food for the all-church family potluck dinner at 6 o'clock to be followed by various classes and youth activities, we ended the lesson.  Next week maybe Nick and Doug can stay for dinner.

It was nice to stay for a church dinner.  Our family practically lived at the church, and I know all the secret rules for potluck dinners.

It was nice to be a Hero.
