My friend Phil had to put George to sleep, as we say in America. George was suffering. I'm sad for Phil.
George was not a pet but a companion and a service dog. Everyone in the church loved George, who lolled around when he wasn't at work with Phil, like at choir practice. The friendly sort of dog you want to scratch behind the ears and sneak a biscuit. Of course none of us will miss George as much as Phil.
I hope God has a place for these loving spirits who brighten our days. Heaven won't be heavenly if my dog Sadie isn't there with me.
Veterinarians say many people can't bear to be with their dogs when it is time to put them down, but that until the last moment, the dog is looking for its person.
