Sixties Dating: Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll Aren't the Same

Who Are These Happy People?
Dating in the 60's had its exhilarations and anxieties--mostly because I was subject to the woes and uncertainties of a teenager. (Pimples!)

Once I  left my "good girl" persona at home in my ballerina decorated bedroom and moved into a dorm, life became an adventure.  While I still thought of them as boys, the males were suddenly men.  More manly.  Exploration ensued.   Girls became womanly.  Sex, drugs and rock & roll commingled with anti-war politics, feminist and civil rights demonstrations and mind expanding college classes.

Now, as a Senior in the Sixties age bracket, dating is confusing and exciting. Pick up lines adjusted for age:  "Where's your husband?  Do you have a boyfriend?  Would you like to have lunch after church?" lead equally to the realization: This guy is hitting on me.  Still, if he's a hot ticket item . . . Laughing and teasing and--dare I admit it--sweet kisses remind me of being a teenager.   Of course the old questions of "how do I look" and "What will he think about (fill in the blank)" are quick at hand.

Sex, drugs and rock & roll aren't the same.

The drugs tend to be blood pressure and diabetes control meds.  Arthritis in the knees has taken the bounce out of rock'n'roll.  Sex--well, we shall see.  One night stands have lost their appeal, replaced by romance.  It may be that around the bend the old familiar path is taking a new twist.
