Sara Gruen's second novel, Water for Elephants, was so good, I'm headed for the library to find her debut novel, Riding Lessons.
Gruen's new book has it all: glamor, sex, murder, romance, politics, financial shenanigans, and, not least, ELEPHANTS!
The framing story is about an old man warehoused in a nursing home, waiting anxiously for his family to take him on an outing to the circus. Since my daughter Rebekah gave me the book for my 61st birthday, I had to ask if there was a message in her choice. In addition to the good writing and the plot that chugs along like the trains it features, the book's wrap up made me laugh. Hope I'm that lively when I'm 90!
The cover says, "Soon to be a major motion picture." Has all the elements including stunning visual ops and Depression era music--would be hard to not make a moneymaker with this one.
