Music in the Streets

Elvis Impersonator at Rhythm on the River
The band played Michael Jackson covers and the crowd was enthusiastic.  About a dozen young musicians cavorted onstage with a brass section of five and mega amps were blasting.  It was a summer night in downtown Longmont.   We'd packed our neighbors and our dogs into Red Beauty, and after a detour to Sonic for burgers, fries and onion rings, we were getting into the music.

We grew up with Michael Jackson--you remember the Jackson Five.  When I'm dancing,  I'm at my first rock concert.  (The Association played in Muscatine in 1966:  "Cherish is the word . . .")  It was a jolt to notice that the blue jean clad crowd getting down in the streets was  full of wrinkled gray-hairs.  OMG, as the kids say.  Where were the other teenagers!

Another summer concert tomorrow night in Roosevelt Park, where we'll also take our dogs and folding chairs.  Folding chairs?  Yeah, the ones that come in knapsacks--the knees don't hold up like they used to.  Bummer.

UPDATE:  More concerts this summer, from the streets of Old Town to the neighborhood parks to the banks of the St. Vrain River.  The Longmont Chorale sang patriotic songs on the 4th of July, while at Rhythm on the River a local guy impersonated Elvis (surprisingly good voice and silk scarves) and we clapped for Angus Mohr, a celtic rock band with an amazing bagpiper. You haven't lived until you've heard a Billy Joel tune on the bagpipes.  We did run into a teen audience listening to a whiney bunch of teenage boys with skinny legs and baggy pants shouting, "Who likes psychedelic music!"  OMG, I'm so glad I'm not a teenager!
