Another Great Thing about Christmas: Babies!

Sean Wesley Griffith, Day 1
Of course, birthing stories are at the heart of Christmas, with both Mary and Elizabeth having unexpected pregnancies and miraculous births.

Last night when my son-in-law texted me, "The pushing has begun," I experienced an upsurge of joy.  I fumbled with the cell phone a minute and called back.  Ben exclaimed, "He's here, he's here!"  I could hear Rebekah in the background, "He's beautiful!"

Holding my own newborn grandbaby wrapped in swaddling clothes renewed my childhood experience of awe evoked by "Away in a Manger" and "Silent Night."  (Yes, the monkey swaddling clothes from the baby shower.)  That newborn baby smell (like a new car, Jesse says).  The little noises.  The intent look that says, "I'm here and this is a strange and wonderful place."  The tenderness of the new mother and father with the baby, with each other.  My darling girl nursing her own baby.

Sean Wesley Griffith is his grandpa Wes's namesake.  I can only think Wes was near to see and rejoice his grandson's birth as well.

Welcome, Sean Wesley.  We're happy you, Mom, Dad and big brother are all doing well your first Christmas.
