If you don't have grandchildren under the age of six, you may not know that Thomas is a friendly little engine of the "I-think-I-can, I-think-I can" school, who gets into scrapes.
Thomas has buddies (other train engines) who help him out, as well as an engineer and the owner of the railroad, Sir Topham Hat, a human. Thomas books, Thomas videos, Thomas pajamas. Little Thomas train sets with all the friendly engines and varied cargo. A veritable phenomenon of the preschool variety.
The Colorado Railroad Museum hosted A Day Out with Thomas, and, honestly, the parking lots were crazy jammed. I wonder what all those wild preschoolers were imagining.
The Railroad Museum is an interesting destination in and of itself, with many large engines, cabooses and train cars from various eras to clamber and climb. A model railroad village was also of interest, too small to ride, too big to play with.
Sir Topham Hat was on site to shake hands. The whole family had a ride on Thomas the passenger train. Though the Thomas theme song was playing on the PA system, the Thomas face on the engine was a slightly manic fixed smile.
A tent held tables with miniature trains, which beat out the petting zoo and the fire truck hands down. A kid could actually play with the trains, not just look at them.
The Railroad Museum has special Spook Ride in October, and a Santa ride for the holidays. It was a little hard for Jesse and me to walk on the grass and gravel, but it was a pleasure to see so many little ones having fun. Fandom starts young.
