First Snow

T

he first snow came a few days into October in the predawn with a plunge of 50 degrees. This early snow was barely half an inch fell, but it added a winter-kissed beauty to the autumn leaves and chrysanthemum.

Sadie and I walked about the neighborhood enjoying the sudden brisk air and the changes in smell. A slight breeze sent snow shower down from the yellow leaves as we passed.

The bushes and berries reminded me of the animals that live among us, only glimpsed, but needing cover, nests, dens, food and water. In an old neighborhood such as ours, the cover and food are more plentiful than in some of the newer areas. I know the squirrels have been getting fat on the windfall apples in our yard, and from Sadie's barking at night we think the racoons have been invited to the feast.

I loved the red October roses with their white embroidery. Actually, all the surviving flowers looked dramatically lovely.
