At Heart of Longmont this morning we started a new inquiry, wrestling with the question, "What part of the body are you?" A good inquiry for the new year.
Pastor Dave's sermon was based, of course, on I Corinthians 12:14 "Suppose the foot should say, 'Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,'-- it does belong to the body nonetheless. Suppose the ear were to say, 'Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,' --it does still belong to the body. If the body were all eye, how could it hear? If the body were all ear, how could it smell?"
The moral of the story, so to speak, is that all members are needed in the church, the body of Christ, with our varied gifts, talents, abilities and inclinations.
But which part of the body am I? The eye that sees what is needed and wanted? The ear that hears the message of inspiration or hears the heartache behind the hello? The foot that follows in Jesus' footsteps?
My husband Jesse sees himself as a warm, welcoming hand. He cares that people experience being wanted. My daughter Abi says, "I'm more of a glial cell," ever the creative thinker. Me, I guess I'm a mouth, I like to tell stories and I like to sing. In the new year I will start helping with the church newsletter. I'll be looking for the noses, as in, "Nose for news."
What part of the body are you? And seriously, who are the noses?
Sermons are generally posted late on Monday. Pastor Dave had a lot more to say about this.
